|Fruit flies (not gnats)?

What kind of symbolism do |Gnat fruit flies have as a totem? Gnats Fruit flies have been around me for the last couple of months, and I'm thinking it's totemic, but finding out what it means is nearly impossible. I'm wondering if maybe they're hanging about in my room because I tend to keep food in there, so I'm trying not to do that, but they also randomly show up while I'm in the bathroom, at work, and other random places.
They could likely be fruit flies, and whether actually a totem/guide or not, if you think there's personal significance and possible guidance to be found in them, then approaching them totemically could be helpful for you. Gnat seems to be a generalized term anyway, along with the term "midge" and various flies under those categories maybe worth researching and looking into to see if anything stands out as something relative to you or relative to a possible lesson for you to learn.
There are some sources online that have information about small, midge-type flies that could help you out in getting information on them. You did also mention something in your journal about gnat/fruit fly causing annoyance to you and as I mentioned then, there could be some lesson to be learned from that association and/or some other lesson(s). Other people's interpretations on what that animal could totemically mean can be rather limiting and maybe not as personally useful for you as interaction with or in some way asking the animal guide itself about what it's trying to teach you.
I wouldn't think too much of it. Spring and Autumn are the black gnat's mating season, so I'd give it another few months to really see if they follow you. Otherwise they're just trying to have some fun and spawn before winter. =)
Not to be rude, but yeah, try bug-spray first, and if they still stick around, *then* weve got to start thinking about possible totemic messaging.
Of course. I'm just saying that now is the time for most small insects to have their mating swarms. (I'm studying entomology in college). They also come inside to get warm.
However, OP, if you're positive that these small insects are following you for a reason, than perhaps you may be right, who knows? I don't know what they mean as a totem though.
I would be surprised if anyone could give me info about them as totems. :P
Gnats look a bit like mosquitoes but have fluffy antennae and lack long mouth. Fruit flies are very small, have a general fly shape and the wild ones tend to have red eyes. But the eyes stand out on the fruit fly's head while the moth-like antennae stand out on the gnat. Totem-wise, I don't know. Good luck!
Break the Heavens,
Ode to fruit fly.
When I was single I traveled a lot and would return to a home infested with fruit flies. I thought this was due to forgetting to take the garbage out, leaving food on the counter or leaving my window open for my cat to get in and out.
Recently married. I have had the fruit fly return to my life after a long absence, this time it is a lone solitary fruit fly. It has actually been more then one as it has been appearing over the course of several months. I have been a practicing shaman for ten years and with a bit of research I found the following totemic description of the fruit fly.
Transformation, Multifaceted vision, Ability to mutate as needed, Courtship display, Connection to colour.
This now leaves room for shamanic interpretation.
My personal totem animals include both the Orca Whale, Tree Frog and Ants. These are different then other animals such as Spider, Raven and now Fruit Fly that appear as messangers.
So, what is the message of the Fruit Fly. Courtship seems to be the relevant reminder as my wife and I hope to start a family. This is a transformative process.
The multi-faceted vision is similar to both the Orca Whale and the Wolf Spider.
I work in graphic design, so my connection to color is relevant making the Fruit Fly a great reminder and messenger of who I Am and what I need to be doing.
When I look back and compare the swarms of fruit flies compared to the solitary fruit fly I can reflect and see that I am now the last one standing. What I used to believe was a nuisance due to an unkept home. I now welcome as a subtle reminder of the path I have traveled.
A path that many began on and only one maintained.
Now, I feel alone and the Fruit Fly is my reminder that I am alone, but I am still on my transformative path and one should remember transformation is a choice. Just like life is a choice.
In summary, when I was young everyone around me was transforming. Now, it seems I am the only one still transforming. The question then remains what am I transforming into? A father, a husband, more?
Thank you for this. I still have fruit flies harassing me even now, and most often it's just one or two. I admit they drive me insane (when I'm playing my DS in the dark, they always land on the screen) and I often kill them, but they always come back. Not, I admit, a nice thing to do to something that is very likely a totem and not some random bug showing up.
